Camel Safari vs Jeep Safari: Choosing Your Experience

Desert Experiences

A desert safari is the highlight of most trips to Jaisalmer, and the first question is usually whether to go by camel or by jeep. The two experiences feel very different: one is slow and traditional, the other fast and adventurous.

This guide compares camel safari and jeep safari in Jaisalmer, so you can choose the one that suits your group, or decide to try both.

Camel safari: slow and traditional

A camel safari is the classic way to experience the Thar. A handler leads your camel across the dunes at a walking pace, and the ride has a gentle, rocking rhythm. There is time to look around, take photographs and enjoy the silence of the desert.

Most rides end at a high point where you can watch the sunset or sunrise. It suits couples, families with children and anyone who wants a calm, memorable experience.

Jeep safari: fast and thrilling

A jeep safari uses an open 4x4 driven by an experienced local driver. The ride climbs and drops over dunes, with sharp turns and bursts of speed. It covers more ground and is popular with groups of friends and teenagers.

The intensity can often be adjusted, but a jeep safari always involves bumps and jolts.

Comfort and suitability

Camel rides need some balance when the camel stands up and kneels down, and long rides can feel tiring for the legs and back. Jeep safaris are more physically jarring because of the movement over the dunes.

Neither is recommended during pregnancy or for people with back, neck or heart conditions. If anyone in your group has health concerns, mention them when you enquire so we can suggest a suitable option, such as a short camel ride or a calm drive to a viewpoint.

Timing and light

Both are most popular at sunset, when the dunes turn gold and the temperature drops. Sunrise camel rides suit travellers staying at a desert camp. In summer, early morning and evening timings are the most comfortable for both.

Photography

Camel safaris give you more time for photographs and the classic silhouette of a caravan against the sunset. Jeep safaris give you dramatic views from the top of dunes, but it is harder to take pictures while moving. Secure your camera and phone on a jeep.

Doing both

Many travellers combine them: a short jeep ride in the late afternoon followed by a camel ride for sunset, or the reverse. Adding quad biking or dinner on the dunes is also possible. We plan the timings so the evening flows smoothly.

Pricing depends on whether the safari is private or shared, the season and transfers. We share a personalised quotation once we know your plan. Availability, timings and weather are confirmed before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

A short camel ride with an adult is usually the gentler option for children.
