Planning a Family Holiday in Jaisalmer

Family Travel

Jaisalmer is a rewarding destination for families. Children enjoy the camels, the dunes and the stories of forts and kings, while adults appreciate the architecture, food and slower pace. With a little planning, a family trip can work well for every generation.

This guide covers how many days to plan, how to pace your sightseeing, which vehicle to choose and how to approach the desert with children and older travellers.

How many days to plan

For most families, three or four days in Jaisalmer is comfortable. It allows one day for the fort and havelis, one for heritage sites outside the city and the desert, and time for rest and arrival and departure days.

Our Jaisalmer Family Holiday is a 3 Nights / 4 Days plan built around this idea, with two city nights and one desert camp night.

Pacing for children and older travellers

Plan one main sightseeing block a day, ideally in the morning, and keep afternoons free for lunch and rest. Children and older travellers tire quickly in the heat, and the fort lanes involve walking on slopes and steps.

For grandparents, we can plan a shorter route through the fort and suggest places to sit while others explore. Let us know about mobility needs so the itinerary and vehicle can be planned around them.

Choosing the right vehicle

Families usually travel in a Toyota Innova or Innova Crysta, which offer more space and comfort than a sedan. Larger families or groups with lots of luggage may prefer a Tempo Traveller. Some families book two vehicles so they can split up when needed.

Mention child seats or other requirements when you enquire. The exact vehicle and seating are confirmed in the quotation. See our taxi service for vehicle options.

Staying in the desert with children

A night at a desert camp is often the highlight of a family trip. Choose a camp with attached bathrooms and family tents or adjacent tents. Pack warm clothes in winter, as nights can be cold, and bring a torch for walking around the camp after dark.

If a night away feels like too much, an evening visit to the dunes with dinner and a return to your hotel is a good alternative. Read desert camp stay vs evening safari to compare.

Activities that suit different ages

A short camel safari is the most popular choice for younger children, usually riding with an adult. Teenagers often enjoy a jeep safari or quad biking, subject to the operator’s age rules. Folk music and dance at the camp appeal to everyone.

In the city, children tend to enjoy the fort ramparts, the lake and the colourful markets. Keep visits short and build in snacks and breaks.

Food, health and practical tips

Jaisalmer has plenty of vegetarian food, and most restaurants can make milder dishes for children. Carry water, sun protection and any regular medicines. In summer, plan outdoor time for mornings and evenings only.

Share dietary needs with us early so we can pass them on to your hotel and camp. Monument tickets and guides are included only when stated in the quotation.
